HOW DO SMOKING, VAPING AND OTHER TYPES OF TOBACCO AFFECT YOUR HEALTH?

Nicotine is the addictive drug found in tobacco products – such as cigarettes, dip, snuff, chew and cigars – but it is not the most dangerous part. There are poisons in all forms of tobacco that can make you sick or could even cause cancer. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs or vapes) also contain nicotine. They are not harmless and are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). You can get addicted to them, too. When you are addicted, it may be hard to stop using them.

E-cigarettes are not a recommended way to quit smoking. Use nicotine patches or gum to help you quit.

Dip or snuff has 28 chemicals that can cause cancer. These tobacco products can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

You can improve your mood and your health by choosing to quit.

SECOND-HAND SMOKE IS HARMFUL

Second-hand smoke is the smoke that comes from someone else’s cigarette, pipe, cigar or hookah. Breathing second-hand smoke can cause cancer, strokes or heart attacks in adults.

There is no safe level of second-hand smoke. Anytime you smoke or are around people who smoke, your heart is at risk.

Children who are around second-hand smoke can experience asthma, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and lung problems.

Babies can be born too early or too small when a pregnant woman is around second-hand smoke.

THIRD-HAND SMOKE IS HARMFUL, TOO

Third-hand smoke is harmful because it can get on your clothes, walls, or furniture. It stays around long after you put the cigarette out.
